To conclude Fashion Show 510, Two Two merged a traditional runway with performance art. Last Stop featured five characters styled in looks from five of our designers: Fey Fey and Gabe Gordon from NYC, Jacek Gleba from London, Mathilde Hiron from Paris, Office H from Suzhou, and Yushokobayashi from Tokyo.
Evoked through the sounds of each city's metro system, the Two Two Sonic Express "departed" for a new destination every few minutes. A custom soundtrack announced each stop while projecting the ambient sounds of its transit system—from the Tube's warning to "Mind the gap" to New York's iconic subway announcer.
While our set remained completely stationary, the audience took a journey around the world, with the clothing as the energy propelling the train from city to city. The backdrop—a 10-foot-tall train interior—was unveiled just before the show, along with a handful of gray plastic stools arranged like metro seats. At each stop, a flurry of commuters rushed past the models, sometimes standing, sometimes sitting, conversing, and scrambling for a seat.
We invited our audience to do their own imaginative work: to see the gray plastic stools as train seats, to imagine the extras (played by our Two Two friends and family) as daily commuters, and to recognize the models as characters with their own stories and style.
The final stop was Two Two Oakland—a platform where each designer can be found.
With Last Stop, we wanted to capture the line that connects Two Two with our community. It is not linear, and it requires some imagination. Our shop has always sought to highlight more than just clothing. We celebrate the lives and experiences that inspire the artists fashioning the world around us. Of course, our own community here in Oakland plays an essential role in supporting and engaging with each story.
Following the show was a store Pop-Up and block party.
