New Wave: Rebellion and Reinvention in the Vietnamese Diaspora

$45.00

Fifty years of the Vietnamese Diaspora as seen through the New Wave movement, showing how young Vietnamese refugees in Orange County found rebellion and reinvention through music, fashion, and community. Featuring essays from prominent Vietnamese scholars, critics, and stars, New Wave explores how music, fashion, and rebellion can be a force for healing. New Wave is a love letter to the first generation of Vietnamese punks and rebels who came of age in the 1980s.

Elizabeth Ai is a Chinese-Vietnamese-American Emmy-winning producer based in Los Angeles. She writes, directs, and produces independent films—including New Wave the documentary. Her credits include Dirty Hands (2008), A Woman’s Work (2019), and Saigon Electric (2011). A fellow of Sundance, Tribeca, and Film Independent, her work is supported by California Humanities, Firelight Media, Knight Foundation, and ITVS.
