In some cultures, white chrysanthemums symbolize loyalty, devotion, purity, and longevity. In others, they can also mean farewell.
Artist Sophia Callahan first encountered paper chrysanthemums in her grandparents’ wedding photos, taken at Poston Internment Camp in Arizona during WWII. With fresh flowers unavailable, those incarcerated crafted paper bouquets for ceremonies and celebrations, weaving resilience and care into fragile petals.
In this evening workshop, we'll learn to make paper chrysanthemums together and share stories of the truths, memories, and ancestral or cultural messages we wish these flowers to symbolize and carry forth.
This workshop and its accompanying zine were created during Sophia’s residency at 2727 California Street in Berkeley in 2019.
Ticket policy: Sliding scale tiers are options to pay what you are able to for this event, with ticket quantities allocated at each tier. Tickets are nonrefundable but you can transfer them to a friend. Let us know if you can't make it and we can also try to share the availability.
Sophia Callahan is an artist and researcher who engages in forms ranging from paintings and soft sculptures to presentations and publications. This workshop is part of an ongoing research project around Japanese American Incarceration during WWII that centers the question of how that particular moment in history can help us understand our current times.
