Bio + Artist Statement
Maya Fuji (b. 1988 Kanazawa, Japan) explores cultural hybridity through her experiences of being a mixed-race issei (first-generation Japanese) woman in the US. Through mythology, folklore, and references to Showa, Heisei, and Bay Area subcultures, she embodies the way she's seen tradition shift within her family and community after immigrating to the Bay Area.
Fuji’s paintings often depict peaceful domestic scenes of women relaxing in total comfort. Her nude figures exist communally, untethered by social norms of nakedness or shame of their own bodies, insouciant of private or public spaces.
Fuji has had solo exhibitions at SWIM Gallery, CA (2022) and YOD Gallery, Osaka (2023). Recent group exhibitions include New Image Art, CA (2022), Glass Rice, CA (2022-2024), Hashimoto Contemporary, CA (2023, 2024), Good Mother Gallery, CA (2021-2024), The Hole, NY (2023), and Charlie James, CA (2024). Fuji’s work has been featured in publications such as New American Paintings, Friend Of The Artist, Artmaze Mag, Metal Magazine, It’s Nice That, and Immigrantly Podcast. She received the Innovate Grant, the SFAC Artist Grant, and was an artist in residence at Wassaic Projects in 2024. Website: www.mayafuji.com
